Welcome to Mrs. Butler's

3rd Grade Realm

Dear Families,

Today is the start of the 4th week of school.  Time is moving quickly!

Attention all Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles-Mark your Calendar! On Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 6:00 PM, Erving will have it's annual Watch Dog kick-off.  We hope to see you there!

ELA Update-In our Journeys Reading Program, there are weekly tests that covers comprehension, vocabulary, proofreading, phonics, grammar, etc.  They will be given on Fridays.  These tests are rigorous and very challenging in the beginning of the year, no matter what skill level each child has.  Therefore, we will be taking the tests together for the first 3 weeks, instead of doing them independently.  On the first test, we will go through every single question  together, so that I can teach test taking skills.  On the second test, we will go through it together, and I will be giving the children guided practice for taking the tests.  For the third test, I will be coaching the students through the test, but slowly have the children work more independently.  (I will not be recording grades for these first 3 weeks, while we practice how to take the tests.)  In about a month, students will begin to take the tests independently and I will be recording the scores at that time.  (I will announce when the scoring will begin.)  It is not uncommon for students to receive low scores in the beginning, so please don't be alarmed.  To me, beginning scores are just a baseline score to show where we are starting and I will monitor growth and progress from that point.

Donors Choose  This past summer, I spent several weeks restructuring my Science materials to include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities for third grade, so that my students can receive science instruction that is both engaging and interesting.  Afterwards, I assembled a Donors Choose project in hopes of gaining funding for the supplies and materials we need.  I am excited to say that my project has been fully funded and we have already started receiving the materials that I had on my wish list.  The next step is that I have to submit a "Thank You" package to the Donors Choose Organization.  Part of the package requirements is to include photographs of my students using the materials that we received. Likewise, I am required to have signed permission slips from parents who are willing to have their child included in these photos.  Attached to this week's Progress Report, you will find a Donors Choose permission slip, if you would like to have your child included in these classroom pictures.  (For more detailed information, please see our classroom Facebook Group.)

My best,

Mrs. J. Butler
