Math:  Measurement
The students took their Measurement test in math today.  We are working on using rulers in the first grade and counting objects.  Don't forget about our IXL.COM website for math facts and other standards.  This is a great website that allows your child to practice his/her math skills and have fun at the same time.

Writing:  Non-Fiction
We will explore fiction vs. non-fiction this week in writing.  The children will also write about real and imaginary topics this week in their writing.  Students are also working on writing stories with a beginning, middle, and end.  Keep a summer journal for your child over vacation and practice writing stories at home.

Science:  Plants
We discussed the parts of a plant and their jobs today in science.  We will conduct a fun science experiment with food coloring and carnations on Wednesday.

Reading:
I will begin the final round of DRA testing for the first grade school year in two weeks.  The end of the year reading goal is a Level 16.  The beginning of second grade is a Level 18.  Students are expected to make reading gains over the course of the summer with their families support.  So, reading daily over the summertime is extremely important!  Summer homework packets will be distributed at the end of the year.  These packets are designed to keep your child's skills "fresh" for the 2nd grade.

*ABCYA.COM and RAZ-KIDS are other great learning websites for the first grade!  These are also free and fun! :)
